Requirements in Safety Standards for Power Adapter Shells

In different safety standards for power adapters, such as audio-visual, information, home appliances, medical, LED drive power and other safety standards, power adapters have corresponding requirements and specifications.


Safety standard

ITE/A.V. Power Supply standard: IEC/EN 62368

Home appliance power supply standard: IEC/EN 60335

Medical power supply standard: IEC/EN 60601

LED drive power standard: IEC/EN 61347


Degree of protection

The protection level refers to the specification requirements for the protection strength of different medical equipment. The operator of medical equipment is a doctor, and the object of action is the patient. In the third edition of IEC60601-1, the protection level is divided into MOOP (Means of Operator Protection, operator protection) and MOPP (Means of Patient Protection, patient protection). Different protection levels correspond to different isolation, creepage and insulation test requirements, usually 1*MOOP, 2*MOOP, 1*MOPP, 2*MOPP are the requirements. For higher electrical safety, an additional 2*MOPP is required for direct patient contact devices.

Heat/fire resistance requirements for plastic enclosures

Plastic case thermal stress test: the maximum temperature under normal working conditions is +10 oC, not lower than 70 oC (60065/60950)

Plastic shell ball pressure test: the maximum temperature under normal working conditions is +15 oC, not lower than 70 oC (61558)

Pressure test on plastic ball supporting charged body: 125 oC (61558/60950)

Plastic enclosure fire rating: V-1 (60950)

Plastic case hot wire test: 650 oC (61558)

Pass or fail does not affect certification

Those who pass this test can use HB grade plastic casing


Flame retardant grade of plastic shell

HB: The lowest flame retardant grade, for samples of 3-13mm, the burning speed is < 40mm/min; for samples of < 3mm, the burning speed is < 70mm/min, or extinguished before the 100mm mark

V2: After two 10s combustion tests on the sample, the afterflame is extinguished within 60s, and the dripping particles ignite the cotton

V1: After two 10s combustion tests on the sample, the afterflame is extinguished within 60s, and the dripping particles cannot ignite the cotton

V0: After two 10s combustion tests on the sample, the afterflame is extinguished within 30s, and the dripping particles cannot ignite the cotton

5VB: After two 5s combustion tests on the sample, the afterflame is extinguished within 60s, and the dripping particles cannot ignite the cotton, and the blocky sample is allowed to be burned through

5VA: After two 5s combustion tests on the sample, the afterflame is extinguished within 30s, and the dripping particles cannot ignite the cotton, and the block sample is not allowed to be burned through


Waterproof and dustproof grade

The identification format of the IP level is IPXX, where XX is two Arabic numerals, the first number means dustproof; the second number means waterproof, and the larger the number, the higher the protection level.


Dust Level

0 No protection No special protection

1 Prevent the intrusion of solid foreign objects larger than 50mm, and prevent the human body from accidentally touching the internal parts of the electrical appliance

2 Prevent the intrusion of solid foreign objects larger than 12mm, and prevent fingers from touching the internal parts of the electrical appliance

3 Prevent the intrusion of solid foreign objects larger than 2.5mm, prevent the intrusion of tools, wires and similar small foreign objects with a diameter larger than 2.5mm

4 Prevent the intrusion of solid foreign objects larger than 1.0mm Prevent the intrusion of mosquitoes, insects or objects with a diameter larger than 1.0mm

5 Prevent foreign objects and dust, completely prevent the intrusion of foreign objects, although it cannot completely prevent the intrusion of dust, but the amount of intruded dust will not affect the normal operation of electrical appliances

6 Prevent foreign objects and dust, completely prevent the intrusion of foreign objects and dust


Waterproof Level

0 No protection, no special protection

1 Prevent the intrusion of water droplets, and prevent vertically falling water droplets (such as condensed water) from causing damage to electrical appliances

2 It can still prevent the intrusion of water droplets when it is tilted at 15 degrees. When the electrical appliance is tilted at 15 degrees, dripping water will not cause damage to the electrical appliance

3 Prevent the intrusion of sprayed water, prevent the intrusion of rainwater or water sprayed in the direction where the vertical angle is less than 60 degrees

4 Prevent the intrusion of splashing water and prevent the intrusion of splashing water from all directions

5 Prevent the intrusion of sprayed water, and prevent the water sprayed from the nozzle in each direction from entering the electrical appliance and causing damage

6 To prevent the intrusion of water in large waves, the electrical appliances installed on the deck shall prevent damage caused by the invasion of large waves

7 To prevent the intrusion of water intrusion, the effect of immersion in submerged water at a certain water pressure or time

8 Prevent submerged water intrusion, submerged in water with specified water pressure to prevent continuous immersion


IP code: A code system indicating the degree of protection of an enclosure against access to hazardous parts by persons, against the ingress of solid foreign objects or water, and additional information related to these protections


In industries with no special requirements, power adapters generally have requirements on safety standards, high-voltage test standards, and heat-resistant/fire-proof requirements for plastic shells. Power adapters are generally used indoors and have no strict requirements on waterproof and dustproof. Only outdoor Power Supplies There will be special requirements on waterproof and dustproof.
