What are the Differences Between Protection Class I and Class II?

Therefore, when choosing different power supply specifications, customers will have a choice between Class I and Class II Power Supplies.

Class I mean that the equipment where protection against electric shock is achieved by using basic insulation and also providing a means of connecting to the protective ground conductor in the building where by routing those conductive parts that are otherwise capable of assuming hazardous voltages to earth ground if the basic insulation fails. All Class I power supplies must have safety ground brought to an electrically conductive chassis in the power supply.

Class II mean that the equipment in which protection against electric shock does not rely on basic insulation only, but in which additional safety precautions, such as double insulation or reinforced insulation are provided, there being no reliance on either protective earth or installation conditions. So Class II power supplies are not required to have the safety ground conductor brought to the power supply.
